How can I tell which URLs failed to cache in Prerender?

Use the Prerender Dashboard’s Render History view to filter and identify URLs that failed due to errors like HTTP 504s.

Overview

It’s helpful to know which URLs failed to cache in Prerender. Failed render attempts usually return HTTP status codes like 404503, or 504.

Using the Render History feature in the Prerender Dashboard, you can quickly filter and flag pages that returned errors during the prerendering process. This allows SEO teams, developers, and content managers to focus on fixing or recaching specific pages.

Possible Causes / Scenarios

  • A large group of pages encountered timeout errors (e.g., 504 Gateway Timeout).
  • A redirect loop or incorrect integration caused a 403 or 404.
  • Changes in token settings or site architecture caused Prerender to lose access to certain URLs.

Step 1: Open Render History

  1. Log into your Prerender Dashboard.
  2. From the left-hand menu, click on Render History.

Step 2: Filter by HTTP Status Code

  1. Click the filter icon next to the column labeled HTTP Status.
  2. In the filter modal, set a range to capture error codes, such as 300 to 599.
  3. Click OK to apply the filter.

Step 3: Review Failed URLs

Once filtered, you’ll see all URLs that returned error responses during recent caching attempts. Look for specific status codes like 504 (timeout) or others that indicate failed renders. These URLs can then be re-tested, fixed, or manually recached.

Additional Tips / Best Practices

  • Sort by Render Time to identify pages that took longest to complete (or failed due to timeout).
  • Use the Cache Manager to manually recache failed URLs after resolving issues.
  • Check Clear Cache settings to ensure pages aren't excluded or ignored by mistake.

When to Contact Support

If you're consistently seeing failed renders across multiple pages and error codes:

  • Export a sample of failed URLs and their status codes.
  • Send them to support@prerender.io with a brief description of the issue.
  • Include screenshots from the Render History view to help us investigate further.
